Motion Design / Illustration / Branding
Festival UK* 2022, spanning England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales, stands as a significant nationwide celebration of creativity and innovation. Ten expansive projects, driven by collaborative teams from the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, will receive funding.
These commissions aspire to impact millions, achieving Festival UK* 2022's dual objectives of fostering unity and showcasing the UK's creativity globally.
My role involved crafting Motion Graphics that encapsulate Festival UK* 2022's personality and values, using their existing brand identity as a starting point. This undertaking encompassed a phase of exploration and development, ultimately shaping the deliverables: two ten-second ident stings.
Design Futures Initiative
PRIMER, organized by The Design Futures Initiative, is a yearly conference held in both the US and Europe. The focal point of this year's event was 'Activating Futures,' showcasing eminent speakers and workshop leaders from the Speculative Design domain over six dedicated days: 'Futures for All,' 'Civic Futures,' 'Global Futures,' 'Inclusive Futures,' 'Corporate Futures,' and 'Digital Futures.'
Due to the global pandemic, PRIMER 2020 transitioned to a virtual format. In this context, I was tasked with creating animations derived from pre-existing designs to inaugurate each session and present the esteemed guest speakers.
To convey the collaborative essence of Festival UK* 2022, where creative teams might comprise a Painter, a Saxophone Player, and a Statistician, I employed a blend of 3D elements along with hand-drawn shapes, lines, and typographic glyphs.
It was crucial to discover a method for visually expressing the festival's emphasis on collaboration through motion. The following experiments showcase my exploration of utilizing collisions to illustrate creative minds bouncing off one another, engaging in improvisation, and yielding unexpected results.
Having assessed successful and unsuccessful animation tests, I utilized the insights to progress into the development phase of the Idents. Each Ident was designed to convey a central message using typography, encapsulating the brand's personality through both design and movement.
Following the delivery of the idents, the Client asked to apply the same approach to a longer form animation to accompany one of the festival’s projects.
Bobby Seagull is a Maths Teacher, Television Presenter and Author who was commissioned by the festival to record a short lecture about the misconceptions and stereotypes associated with learning Maths. My animation would serve as a visual accompaniment, turning the audio lecture into an explainer video.
